Reminder: Texas Real Estate Professionals, Complete Your Legal Updates

If you have not already completed a Legal Update I or II course, you must do so well in advance of December 31st, 2017.

The Texas Real Estate Commision Education and License Services Division has informed us that students must complete the current Legal Update I and II course by December 31 to satisfy your education requirements.  We will no longer be providing these courses after that date.

Texas Benefits for Veteran Real Estate Professionals

The Texas Real Estate Commission has streamlined and expedited the application process for service members and their spouses applying for a real estate license.

  1. Qualifying individuals will first need to determine if they want to be an Agent, a Broker, or an Inspector.
  2. Complete an application for the desired license
  3. Attach the Supplemental Form for Military Service Members, Military Veterans, and Military Spouses
  4. Base application and examination fees will be waved if
    • Your service, training, or education meets requirements for a license
    • You hold a current license from another jurisdiction with equivalent requirements
    • You held the license within the last 5 years
  5. Provide fingerprints for a background check
  6. Pass the written examination
  7. You may request to have your military education, experience, or training evaluated for licensing credit

Texas Real Estate Deadlines Extended

The Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) is extending all August application and renewal deadlines for 30 days to accommodate those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Licenses that expired on August 31, 2017, will now expire on September 30, 2017. Applications that expire between August 21, 2017, and September 30, 2017, will also be extended for 30 days.

If you hold a Texas real estate license you must renew your license every two years on the anniversary of licensure. To renew your license you must complete 18-hours of approved continuing education at least 10 days before expiration, log on to the TREC website or complete a mail-in form and pay the appropriate fee - $217 for brokers, $110 for sales agents.

How do I renew my Texas real estate license?
You must renew your license every two years. The state will send you a renewal notice about 90 days before your license expires.

  1. Complete 18 hours of approved continuing education at least 10 days before expiration (see requirements below)
  2. Renew your license online or by mail.
  3. Pay the appropriate fee 
    • Broker - $217
    • Sales Agent - $110

What continuing education is required to renew my Texas real estate license?
Sales Agents must complete 18 hours of approved CE including:

    • 8 hours of TREC Legal Update I & II
    • 10 hours of elective CE
    • 6 hours of Broker Responsibility if you are a broker appointed supervisor. These 6 hours count towards the 10 elective hours.

Where can I find courses to renew my Texas real estate license?
Real Estate Training Institute offers online HD video 18-hour packages and individual courses to meet state requirements. Courses are available 24/7 on any internet capable device. Real Estate Training Institute will submit your continuing education to Texas after completion. Copies of your continuing education certificates will also be available to print immediately after completion.

What happens if I do not complete my Texas real estate continuing education on time?
You must pay a $200 deferral fee, giving you an additional 60 days to complete your continuing education or renew as inactive. You may renew your license for up to 6-months after your license expires by paying the appropriate fee. Between 6-months and 2-years licenses can be renewed by paying the appropriate fee and applying for reinstatement. After 2-years you must reapply and pass the state examination.
